]]> In times of expanding cities, suburbs are growing into intersections of green space idyll and fanning-out beton. They are illusory worlds of restricting symmetry and occasionally unsettling silence. Adolescents plan their escapes into allegedly better worlds of big cities – and return to the scene of their carefree childhoods, just like I did.

I see my kids, myself as a kid, my parents in myself, myself. Present. Love, and cracks in the matrix, glitches in our perfect world.

]]> Mississippi in the deep south of the USA has the lowest per capita income among all US states. In 2009 it ranked last among all states in the domains of poverty, access to healthcare, education, and expectancy of life. One in five inhabitants lives below the national poverty line, in some counties almost every other. Often called “The Lost South”, Mississippi looks back on a rather controversial history – also affected by racism and ongoing prejudices – proving that populating the same soil does not necessarily lead to a mutual homeland. Yet there are shared niches, common ground, where the different population groups find together.

“Common ground” shows photographs from the Mississippi Delta, a fascinating area of conflict, full of blues, diversity, decline – and hope.

]]> Working in an environment where the non-spreading of bacteria could be the thin red line between surviving and sepsis, the individuum loses its recognizability behind scrubs and mask and hood.

With my project “Detaching the hood” I try to picture the visual loss of individuality in a community where the individual struggle dealing with death is not only omnipresent but also quintessential – not only for the individuum but for the whole community. Wearing scrubs, mask, and hood, all look alike, uniformed. But what’s making this community so strong is its potpourri of characters which come to light once the hoods are detached.

]]> According to dictionaries, the word niche derives from the Latin “nidus” or nest. Expanding from its primary sense as an architectural recess, a niche can be applied to a rocky hollow, crack, crevice, or foothold. The sense of a niche as a clearly defined narrow space led to its use describing the relational position of an organism’s species, its ecological niche. I always understood this word in another, slightly different way. For me, it resembles that place in human life, where you do not have to bend your thoughts or dreams, where you can just be yourself, just be.

The search for that niche of your own is a continuous emotional development, where searching and finding are a dynamic, intersecting transition.

In my project, I try to capture moments where the search for or maybe the presence of inner balance are visible.

Latitude was mainly shot in New York, USA. Fault Lines was shot on location in County Kerry, Ireland. Little Calm was shot in Hamburg, Germany.
